Abstract

The word which has been used to denote chastity in English language and Bible dictionaries is Modesty, which hints towards a person whether a male or a woman who is pious, honest, or in other words a person who strictly remains attentive towards chastity. This words also means a person who is free from vulgarity or indecent activities. In the teachings of Catholicism, the words which resonate with meanings of modesty are purity, virginity and celibacy. Catholicism stresses upon the adherence to modesty so, that the followers of Catholicism may attain the divine qualities, out of which chastity or modesty is of prime importance. In Catholicism, the quality of modesty has been given a status of importance which has to be acquired by the common people, whereas it has been declared as mandatory for every member of the religious group. In the Catholic faith, chastity is a sign of total embrace of celibacy rather than only referring to inner or exterior piety. In the Catholic religion, maintaining chastity is regarded as required, and those who do not adhere to these teachings risk facing harsh consequences. On the other hand, those who do not uphold these teachings are warned that they will face consequences.
