Abstract

Women have played a crucial and respected role in Sufism, significantly shaping its spiritual and communal dimensions. Throughout history, they have been recognized as saints, scholars, and mystics, contributing to the development and dissemination of Sufi thought. One notable figure is Rabia al-Adawiyya, an 8th-century mystic who is celebrated for her profound spiritual insights and devotion to God. Women in Sufism have often transcended societal gender norms, leading spiritual gatherings, composing influential poetry, and participating in theological discussions. This inclusive nature of Sufism, which values inner purity and direct experience of the divine, has allowed women to make lasting contributions, embodying the Sufi ideals of love, humility, and devotion.
