Invoking of Jahili Poetry in Tafsir Fath Al-Qadir (An Analytical Study of Surat Al-Noor)

Abstract

Allah Almighty revealed the Holy Quran on the heart of Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in an eloquent language, which contains spiritual perfections as well as the glory of an incomparable miracle. For this reason, the commentators (Muffassirīn) make full use of the poetry of Jāhiliya to highlight different aspects of the Holy Qur’an during the exegesis. Jāhilī poetry is known by the name of Dewān-e-Arab. From the time of the prophet, s companions, this process began that they used to present evidence from Jāhilī poetry to interpret the Quranic verses. In this context Hazrat ʻUmer (RA) said it is necessary to make use of the Diwān of Jāhilī poetry. In this regard the method of Hazrat Abdullah ibn ʻAbbās (RA) is very vivid. Almost all the Commentators (Muffassirs) followed his footsteps to narrate the Qur’anic meanings. The Author of Tafsīr Fath al-Qadīr has quoted rich evidences from Jāhilī poetry while making tafsīr. This paper will justify the fact that in Sūrah Al-Nūr. In Sūrah Al Nūr Imām Al Shūkānī got help from Jahilī poetry while interpreting the Qur’anic Ayats. The study of Sūrah Al Nūr is very important in the present Era for purity of character and improvement of social manners. In this paper, the research Methodology with qualitative paradigm will be adopted to reach on the conclusion in this study.
