Abstract

This research is aimed to analyze the binary opposition in the short story The City Dwellers by Qaisra Shahraz. The concept of binary opposition is explored through the theory of deconstruction presented by Jacques Derrida (1976) with the postmodern perspective. Derrida’s theory and postmodern perspective both challenge the existing belief and deconstruct a new perspective to a text. Derrida’s deconstruction as method of analysis suggested by Searle (1993) is used this research. This paper dismantled the general view of urbanization as it’s believed the trusted way of living and rural life as conservative and backward. The deconstructive analysis through binaries revealed that urbanization is causing decline in ethical and moral values.
