Abstract

This article explores the essential sources for Tafsir (Quranic interpretation), focusing on how scholars interpret Quranic verses. It highlights the diverse foundations used by scholars in both Sunni and Shia traditions. The discussion distinguishes between straightforward interpretation and allegorical exegesis, explaining the concept of impactful interpretation. The primary sources for Tafsir, including the Quran, Hadith, and teachings of the early generations (Salaf), are introduced. The article also examines scholars' views on incorporating Israelite traditions into Tafsir, analyzes the methodological intricacies of interpreting through the Arabic language, and explores scholars' preferences evident in language choices. This comprehensive analysis contributes to a better understanding of scholars' varied approaches to uncovering the profound meanings within the Quranic text.
